Rather than examining students’ knowledge, alternative assessment encourages students to apply their knowledge and their understanding and personal meaning of what they have learnt in class on authentic tasks. Authentic tasks, which foster higher-order creative, critical and analytical thinking skills, allow students to work together to understand complex content and diverse perspectives, to solve problems and to make decisions about situations that resemble the outside world. Placing the emphasis on ‘real-life’ skills, alternative assessment enables teachers to provide students with experiences aligned with 21st century learning, and students to achieve personal growth.
