The use of information and communication technology (ICT) has redefined the educational sector and particularly foreign language education by focusing on creating more flexible, interactive and student-centered learning environments. An important aspect of the online educational process is online assessment, as the adoption of ICT in classrooms has greatly influenced the way the assessment is carried out. This study explored Greek and Russian EFL university students’ awareness and attitudes towards the use of electronic portfolios as a form of online formative assessment to monitor the process and progress of foreign language learning. To that end, data was collected by 190 participants via an online questionnaire. Formative assessment, and especially the use of e-portfolios is viewed positively by students and is suggested as a meaningful, effective and more beneficial means of online assessment for learning English which could lead to significantly better results for the learners. Based on the findings obtained, some practical suggestions are offered. This session is based on the research entitled The use of E-portfolio as an alternative assessment method produced by Dr. V. Papachristou, Ms. Maria-Araxi Sachpazian and Ms Olg Safokina.
